Apple Picking in Wisconsin and Learning Farming
Share
Owner Kelley and kids Jack and Bailey live in Wisconsin, next to Elegant Farmer, known for the most delicious apple pie baked in a paper bag! They built their family home with a view of the orchards and the idea of being able to enjoy apple picking season steps away from their back door. The end of summer is known when the farmer cuts the grass for their parking lot and soon the lots will be filled with
families enjoying the beautiful weather and days spending time on the farm. The air fills with smells of apple cider donuts and our view is a big yellow barn with a giant smiley face on it. It's a staple in our city of Mukwonago, Wisconsin and we cannot get enough of it.
Baby Jack family has farming roots that go way back to our first settlers. The Legler last name established the city of New Glarus as the original farmers who came over from Glarus, Switzerland and have their name etched in a monument at the center of town. Since first arriving in America, farming has been the way for generations and it is really exciting that Baby Jack created a Farm Learning Lovey design to honor our history. It's also fitting that Baby Jack family migrated to a community surrounded by beautiful farm lands!
For a fun August blog, I wanted to share some of our top favorite things to do with kids in the Milwaukee area -- in case you ever come to Wisconsin, we want you to enjoy these staples that our family grew up with:
1) Elegant Farmer in Mukwonago, Wisconsin
Indulge in its award-winning Apple Pie Baked in a Paper Bag®. "The best apple pie in America" according to 3 generations of fans, the Food Network, Wall St. Journal, Milwaukee Magazine and others. Join them for fall harvest apple picking and leave with a bag of delicious apples, pie, breads and even their chicken pot pie!
2) Green Meadows Petting Farm in East Troy, Wisconsin
Green Meadows Petting Farm is a hidden gem off hwy 20 that provides a petting zoo, farm activities, kitten adoptions, playground activities, pony rides, a gift shop and more. This colorful farm has hours of play for the entire family - no matter your age!
3) Milwaukee County Zoo Farm Area in Milwaukee, Wisconsin
This zoo has our heart since Jack and Bailey grew up going several times a week to visit various parts and animals. We always browsed the zoo and ended our stay at the farm playground, lured the kids off the play set with some ice cream from the farmer stand and waved to the rides all aboard the zoo train. Stop by the gift shop at the main entrance and seek out Baby Jack Crinkle Tag Squares, even the farm design!
4) The Smiley Barn Toy Shop in Delafield, Wisconsin
Step inside an actual barn that converted to a toy store and another yellow barn with a great big smile to welcome you to be a kid again. Browse some of the greatest toys trending but also check out the nostalgia the Smiley Barn has for sale. You will even spot Baby Jack Crinkle Toys in their baby corner!
5) Machine Shed Restaurant in Pewaukee, Wisconsin
Country cooking at its finest! Grab some breakfast, lunch or dinner and enjoy this cute little farm stop restaurant off of hwy I-94. The kids will have so much fun with the farming toys to climb outside and the mini replicas to play at the dining table!
6) Sassy Cow Creamery in Bristol, Wisconsin
Our kids grew up visiting this dairy farm hidden between Sun Prairie and DeForest, Wisconsin. This place offers some of the best scenery of farm fields that stretch to the horizon as well as amazing ice cream that is sold all over the state. Grab a grilled cheese, pet the cow, climb the tractor playground and enjoy the simple life.
